Whipple 3.0 L Supercharger - More Power with Better Drivability
Posted on
A Whipple 3.0 L supercharger on top of a well-built Chevy LS can generate 1000HP without breaking a sweat. That means big power without sacrificing idle quality or part throttle drivability. That's not an extreme statement. While this has been true for many years, the new Whipple 3.0L supercharger has even more power and better drivability than previous designs. We have seen the results with our eyes while testing our latest MAX10R pulley system for these superchargers. The 3.0 liter is much more than just a .1 liter bump in displacement. It’s a major redesign of critical components. Let’s review the features and introduce you to our latest dual-drive pulley system.
Whipple Hot Rod Kit: Universal Superchargers for the rest of us
Whipple is well-known for building bolt-on supercharger systems for modern cars and trucks, such as Gen 6 Mustangs, Camaros, and late-model Mopars. Those application-specific kits emphasize packaging and bolt-on installation. Things are different here at Concept One Pulley Systems. We design parts that help you adapt superchargers to your hot rod, old muscle car, or classic truck.
Is the hot rod community too hung up on letters while ignoring the numbers? Many hot rodders are familiar with engines like LSA, ZL1, LT4, LT5, and LS9 RPO codes. Many of these superchargers are small by today's standards. The two dream scenarios are to find a cheap LSA supercharger or buy a complete OE crate engine. The LSA is just a 1.9L supercharger, while the elusive LT4 supercharger is even smaller at 1.7L. Enthusiasts install these “Letter” superchargers and then get frustrated when they don’t meet expectations. We get calls all day long from people who want increasingly smaller pulleys or break stuff after locking the boost bypass actuator. They want more!
Whipple 3.0 L vs LSA - Bigger is better
The bottom line, LSA and similar OE superchargers are small and scarce. The juice may not be worth the squeeze. If you find an LSA at a bargain price, grab it. Just keep in mind that an LSA supercharger can produce around 700HP before the efficiency drops off. The math is pretty easy. A Whipple 1815-30 Hot Rod is almost twice the displacement of a 1.7L LSA and is readily available. If you need more power, get a bigger blower. The Whipple 3.0 L will generate 1000 HP at only 12 PSI boosts on a 427ci LS. That's at 6200 rpm. If you want to race dynos, there is room to grow. 1200HP-plus can be achieved with more boost and more rpm.
Technology - Size isn't everything
Whipple's WK1815-30 Hot Rod supercharger features super efficient GEN 6 twin screw rotors, a high-density intercooler core, a giant 112mm inlet, and a high flow intake manifold. The result is power and efficiency that easily adapts to LS-platform engines. It's not just bigger, it's significantly more advanced than the LSA -- which was introduced around 2009.
Adapting the Whipple 3.0L supercharger to your vehicle is straightforward as long as you can accommodate the installed height of the blower. The supercharger measures around 21.5" from the crank centerline to the top of the unit and 20.8" at the throttle body. These dimensions are ideal for filling the engine bay of a tri-five Chevy or C10 pickup. If you have an F-body or Corvette, it's advisable to measure before you buy. What hot rodder doesn't love a big, muscular engine?
The WK-1815-30 Whipple 3.0 L Hot Rod Kit includes a twin-screw supercharger with a bypass valve system, a bar and plate intercooler, billet -8AN fuel rails, and a high flow intake manifold. If you can swap an intake and carburetor, you can install a Whipple 3.0 L Hot Rod Kit on your Chevy LS.
Best Whipple Serpentine Kit
Driving the Whipple 3.0 L supercharger pulley presents a challenge. The supercharger's large 112mm inlet requires the pulley to be positioned forward, which in turn shifts all accessories forward to maintain alignment. Integrating two drives into a compact form factor adds additional complexity. Concept One's new MAX10R dual-drive pulley system addresses this need effectively.
MAX10R is the only system featuring a true, dedicated 10-rib supercharger drive. A single 10-rib belt connects the crankshaft to the supercharger, while idlers increase the belt wrap to 440 degrees. Everything else—the water pump, alternator, AC compressor, and power steering pump—is driven by a separate 8-rib drive belt. Isolating the water pump from the supercharger drive reduces excessive loads on it. The same applies to the power steering pump shaft. Separate heavy-duty tensioners are provided for each belt. To minimize parasitic loss, belt wrap corresponds to each component’s load and requirements.

Concept One produces MAX10R serpentine drive kits for a wide range of superchargers, with more applications in development. So we’re not playing favorites. We are thrilled by the many excellent offerings available. If this Whipple 3.0 L supercharger indicates where technology is headed, we can all look forward to cars and trucks that provide more power with excellent drivability.
